me, me and me
My name is Glen Chivers and I am 21 years of age and I am also deaf. Born to deaf parents in 1986 at the Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton, England I have grown up to be what some say a "computer geek". Not particulary fond of these words, especially since I do not have the features of the steryotypical geek being scruffy with greasy hair and glasses - glued to the computer 24/7. No I reckon I do have some sort of fashion taste and actually go beyond my bedroom door - perhaps thats a bit harsh for geek, lets say front door. Oh, and I don't wear glasses.
Attending the Henry Beaufort Secondary School in Winchester, Hampshire I attained good GCSE grades (9A's, 3B's and 1 C) and after completing my GCSE's I attented the Mary Hare Grammar School for the deaf in Newbury, Berkshire. This was only for the sixth form and I obtained A-Level grades of A for Geography, B for Economics, B for Business Studies and C for Mathematics along with an additional qualification of level 3 for IT and Communication skills.
Currently studying BSc(Honours) Information Technology and Computing with the Open University and hoping to graduate early 2009 I am a fan of programming. Java in particular and would consider a career in it if I can get it to a high enough standard. I am also doing a Cisco CCNA qualification, enjoyable but not easy. And to pay all of that I currently have a part time job at TNT United Kingdom, I do not see this as a career but just a job to pay for life now. Hopefully my career will be a bit more high profile involving computers, more specifically programming.
Sportwise, I'm a fan of kiting and own two kites, a 2m and 4m one but hopefully I'll be getting a bigger one sometime this year. Cycling is another hobby of mine; it's so nice to have the wind blowing in you and exploring the English countryside in summer. Last but not least I cannot forget to mention skiing, only taking it up in early 2006 I have loved it ever since and will be continuing it for a long time I'm sure. Being a bit of a nature lover, in my free time I love getting out of the house to explore the beauty of the world. One of my favourite local places is the nearby New Forest National Park; abundant with wildlife and wild horses it is more often than not a good photo oportunity which is another of my hobbies. Relatively new to the digial SLR world I am attempting to bring my skills up to scratch and take good photos which I will upload to this site.
Getting out of the house does not just include the New Forst but travelling; I have been fortunate enough to have been to a fair few places on this planet and it has always been my dream to travel the world. A dream I hope to oneday fulfill. But for now I'll setting for the perhaps too many holidays I take every year. Roll on Canada, Caribbean, New York and Portugal!
